Senate Asphalt worked on two paving jobs in Washington, D.C. this spring that were definitely not run of the mill.

Crews from Senate Asphalt completed milling and paving a walkway (14-feet wide and 2,200 linear feet long) on the National Mall, along the length of the Reflecting Pool between the Lincoln Memorial and the WWII Memorial. Senate Asphalt also milled and repaved Vice President Joe Biden’s driveway at his residence at the U.S. Naval Observatory. Both jobs were completed in April.

“It’s pretty neat to pave at these unique sites in our nation’s capital! Our crews take great pride in performing their work and emphasize quality and safety all the time,” says Mike Rounds, Plant Manager for Senate Asphalt.

The work was scheduled for when Vice President Biden

was out of town for a stretch of days in early April, Rounds explains. “We had to be flexible and adjust to his schedule. Arranging employee and equipment access to the site was time-consuming and the Secret Service performed thorough background checks of our detailed employee roster prior to us mobilizing,” he says.

The National Park Service is the project owner for the National Mall walkway. The project owner for the Vice President’s driveway is the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Washington. Senate Asphalt is a subcontractor to Corman Construction for the walkway on the National Mall project. “We are a subcontractor to Environmental Design & Construction for the Navy IDIQ (Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity) contract, which is a five-year service contract for naval facilities, and the Vice President’s residence is one of many task orders we’ll perform work at,” Rounds notes.
